Our feet are an often neglected part of the body, particularly in cooler weather when they are hidden away under socks and in boots. However, keeping them in tip top condition is so important. Fortunately, the foot doctor is on hand with some tips to keep them healthy…
1. Don’t wear too tight shoes
Shoes shouldn’t rub or pinch, and you should have a little room at the top of the shoe. The ball of your foot should fit comfortably in the widest part of the shoe, and your foot should feel supported. If your shoes are too tight, you can end up changing your stride and even damaging the bones in your foot.
2. Keep your feet clean – and dry them well
Give your feet the attention they deserve when you’re washing. Scrub them thoroughly and then dry them thoroughly too. Make sure that you dry between each toe, and keep your feet dry. Fungal infections can start in damp conditions.
3. Give your feet a self-exam
Make time once a week to check your feet. Look out for anything unusual – peeling areas, discoloured toenails and red skin. These could be the first signs of problems such as athlete’s foot or other infections. If you notice any of these, it’s a good idea to visit the foot doctor to get them checked out.
4. Look after your feet in public
Avoid going barefoot in public areas – fungi thrives in shared changing rooms and showers. Invest in a pair of shower shoes to keep your feet protected.
5. Don’t share shoes
It’s very easy for infections to be passed on when you share shoes. This is particularly true when the same shoes are worn by lots of people – for example, at bowling alleys. If you’re a keen bowler, we recommend buying your own pair.
6. Avoid those sweaty feet
If your feet sweat when you’re wearing socks, you can end up with a perfect breeding ground for infections. Try to avoid wearing socks that are very tight. Socks that are made from wool also tend to hold moisture, so don’t wear these when it’s warm.
7. Cut your toenails straight across
When you cut your toenails, don’t round the edges and don’t cut them too short. Doing these things can put you at risk of painful ingrown toenails. You should also make sure that your toenails are in good condition before you paint them.
